SALEM, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Tamassee-Salem Middle/High School could close at the end of the school year.
Students were told that the school would be closed and consolidated after the school year on Thursday. Parents were later notified.
FOX Carolina is told that a meeting will be held at the School District of Oconee County's office board office on South Pine Street in Walhalla at 6 p.m. Oct. 12.
Students and parents, upset at the abrupt announcement and that students were notified before parents, have been told that the school may consolidate with Walhalla.
School officials will hear the proposal to close the school on that date and are expected to vote on whether to close the school on Oct. 19.
Located 14 miles north of Walhalla in northeastern Oconee County, "Tamassee-Salem’s small enrollment in a rural setting allows it to function as a center of community activity for its young people not only for academic pursuits, but also for social activities, " according to its website.
