Multiple news outlets reported that a San Antonio school district was investigating the incident, which happened Friday during a game between John Jay and Marble Falls high schools.

It shows one John Jay High School player charge into the back of a referee, knocking him down. Right after that, another John Jay player dives onto the official on the ground.

“The first thing we want is that those two kids never play football again, ” said Wayne Elliott of the Austin Football Officials Association, referring to the players who were both ejected from the game.

The incident happened with about a minute left in the game. John Jay lost to rival Marble Falls 15-9.

How many players in high school football?

In a standard game, there are 11 players allowed on opposing sides of the neutral zone. Most schools or games are played with this number; however, the rise in 7, 8, and 9 player teams is becoming more common. This is due to travel teams that are being formed of students that are home schooled or attend public or private schools that do not have football as an athletic sport. Rules vary according to the numbers allowed but are largely similar to the 11 player game. The National Federation of State High School Associations publishes rules for all of these numbered teams.
