Grant Fisher, an 18-year-old senior from Grand Blanc High School in Michigan, became the seventh U.S. high school boy to break 4 minutes in the mile, clocking 3 minutes, 59.38 seconds to finish third at the Nike Festival of Miles in St. Louis on Thursday night.
Fisher, who will run collegiately at Stanford in the fall, equaled the third-fastest mark ever run by an American high schooler. Interestingly, he ran the exact same time Oregon senior Matthew Maton did on May 8.
On Thursday, Fisher ran nearly even splits en route to his barrier-breaking run. Coming off the final curve, he was in second place behind Tyler Pennel, a professional runner with ZAP Fitness, before Nike-sponsored professional Jordan McNamara came kicking past to post the win in 3:58.81. Pennel, the 2014 U.S. marathon champion, held on for second in 3:58.99.
