Elementary and secondary art teachers everywhere are invited to explore the University of Missouri's newest online master's degree – in art education. This 32-hour master's program is a hybrid of nine hours of on campus summer courses in Columbia, Mo., and 20 - 23 credit hours of online course work throughout the rest of the year.
The program will have you examining contemporary topics, exploring studio experiences as an artist-teacher and conducting authentic research in your school or other community environments.
The Mizzou approach is to combine artistic thinking with our visual culture, thus interconnecting our image-rich world with the 21st century. The summer on-campus course work allows you to view artwork in person in order to critique at full scale and enjoy the community built when diverse learners come together to discuss their approaches to art and teaching.
In your online course work, you will enjoy diverse discourse with blogging, discussion board responses, voice threads, visual conference meetings, Skype, online galleries and writing groups.
I feel so supported in the art education program at Mizzou. I know that my professors are deeply invested in my education and I am reminded of it every day.
Bertie McLarenIndividual courses are available
The master's degree is well-suited for practicing teachers. Teachers from various disciplines (such as fine art, graphic design, journalism, English, social studies and elementary education) are invited to enjoy some of the individual courses available in the program, such as Visual Literacy and Artistic Thinking. Learn more about these courses on the course planner page.
This program does not lead to initial teacher certification. It is intended for practicing teachers who already have their initial teaching certification. If you need K-12 art certification, Mizzou invites you to learn more about the on-campus Art Education master's program.
