Character education in American public schools

"We are so proud of the efforts made by our students to be the best they can be in terms of character, " said Dr. Dan Nerad, superintendent. "The awards issued by the Character Education Partnership are not given lightly, and they speak to the great work being done in our schools."

In order to achieve National Schools of Character status, each school has to submit a collaborative and

illustrative 25-page portfolio outlining exemplary implementation on each of the 11 Principles of Character Education. This portfolio is then sent to Character.org ) for finalist consideration. Schools selected as National School of Character Finalists undergo a rigorous visit by an outside examiner, which include discussions with parents, students and staff members.

To date, Birmingham Covington School (2007), Beverly Elementary School (2010), Greenfield Elementary School (2009), Bingham Farms Elementary School (2011), Pembroke Elementary School (2011), Pierce Elementary School (2011), West Maple Elementary School (2013), Harlan Elementary School (2014), Derby Middle School (2014), Groves High School (2015) and Berkshire Middle School (2015) were named National Schools of Character.
