The Spanish Fork Dons had a 14-11 lead over the Maple Mountain Golden Eagles with 3.7 seconds left on the clock in a Utah Class 4A state play-in game on Tuesday night. On 4th down, all Spanish Fork had to do was run out the clock. The ball was snapped to quarterback Jason Money who ran right as he watched the clock expire. He then just sort of stopped, forgetting that the play had to end. Maple Mountain’s Jason Blanthorn stripped the ball and teammate Brandon Beebe picked it up and returned it 25-yards for the game-winning, season-saving touchdown.
The play is both incredible and heartbreaking depending on which team you identify with during your next viewing of the play. It is an incredible lesson to kids to play to the final whistle and proof that anything can happen. Also, it sucks. The game was over. All he had to do was fall down.
