SANDIA PARK, N.M. (KRQE) – For most, senior year of high school is supposed to be filled with fun and memories. However, some students at East Mountain High School in Sandia Park didn’t want the lasting memory of their class to be a controversial t-shirt.
The T-shirt in question says, “The girls are hot, the guys are fine, we’re the class of 6 + 9.” Many in the class interpreted the use of the numbers “6” and “9” to be in reference to a sexual act.
The design was one of many submitted to seniors for selection by two parent volunteers from a school organization. The majority of the class selected the version with the perceived innuendo. The rest of the students voiced their opposition to principal Monique Siedschlag.
“Some students came to me and said that they were upset with the choice, ” said Siedschlag. “That they did not feel comfortable wearing that shirt.”
In another meeting between students and administrators to discuss opposition to the shirt, talk about the design’s message drew tension between the assistant principal and a senior.
“Then I spoke up and said it was, the t-shirt standing up for what we believe in, ” said Derrick Merkey, East Mountain High School senior. “Because we’re going to be adults soon and like stand up for what we want and that’s when she directly looked at me in front of everyone and said so you believe in oral sex?”
The school says the assistant principal was merely asking if the student really believed oral sex should represent the class.
“The statement that was made was in the context of do you believe that East Mountain High School, that we should represent East Mountain High School in this capacity with a sexual innuendo on a t-shirt, ” added Siedschlag.
In the end, the East Mountain High School class of 2015 will be going with a completely different senior t-shirt altogether. This one has met with approval from administrators and parents.
