Classes meet for shorter time periods in a quarter system.
A quarter system is commonly used in some community colleges. In this setup, the college operates on four quarters as opposed to the traditional two semesters with a summer break. On the quarter system, students typically schedule for classes in the fall, winter and spring and take a break during the summer, which is the fourth quarter.
Pros and Cons
A quarterly setup allows students to take courses for shorter periods of time before moving on to the next set of courses. It is particularly useful to highly capable students who want an accelerated learning format in each class. However, some students struggle with a condensed format and the constant transitions to new classes. You can take summer classes, though many community colleges recommend that students take the standard break. Course units on a quarter system are worth two-thirds of their value on a traditional semester setup.
